PEEBLES (C103)-- Tuesday night saw an incredible showing of sportsmanship as two Southern Hills League rivals, the Peebles Indians and the Manchester Greyhounds, came together to fight against cancer in their first ever Coaches Versus Cancer game. In a rare moment, a first for veteran C103 sportscaster Don Bowles, the two teams met at the center of the floor as a group undivided before the tipoff.
"I don't think I've ever seen two teams come out and start the game in a huddle together like Manchester and Peebles did tonight," Bowles said. "It was an awefully nice touch."
Peebles Head Coach Josh Arey echoed the sentiment.
"[Manchester Head Coach] Aaron Lockhart is a class act," Arey said. "He and I are great friends. His kids are a reflection of him; they're great kids. I just have so much respect for Aaron and his kids and their program. It was a great gesture by both teams."
The night ended in a 84-60 win for the Indians, but for those in attendance, the game was just one of the high points of the night. After a soup supper, players jerseys were auctioned off to help raise money to support Peebles athlete Spencer Kelley, who was recently diagnosed with leukemia. All-in-all, approximately $22,200 were raised in the event, which will benefit the family of Spencer Kelley, Andy Countryman, Coaches For Cancer and Relay For Life - Adams County.
